Browsing Through the File System
Browse My Computer is a file system browser similar to Windows Explorer. This feature is provided because sometimes we know exactly where a file that we want is, and would prefer to directly browse to it in the file system rather than search for it. So you can think of browsing using Browse My Computer as an alternative way to get to your files. What you can do with your files after that is the same as in search:
- you can locate and select files in Browse My Computer to preview them in InView
- Also, when a file or folder is selected, the Functions pane will show the actions that can be performed on it.
Navigating through the folders on your computer in Browse My Computer is just like in Windows Explorer. But Browse My Computer has some additional nice touches that make working with it easier.
In the right pane, when you click on the name of a folder, this selects the folder without opening it, so that you can perform actions on it, like renaming, using the Functions pane. In contrast, when you click on the folder icon next to the name, what happens is that you’ll navigate into the folder.

As you navigate into folders and subfolders, Logicle Secretary keeps track of the sequence of folders that you have visited along the way and displays them in blue text. This type of mechanism is commonly known as “breadcrumbs,” named after the trail of breadcrumbs that Hansel and Gretel left to help themselves find their way home.
You can make use of the breadcrumbs to backtrack through the path that you took. You can click on any of the folders in the trail to go to these folders. In the breadcrumbs, the folder you are now at is in bold and highlighted in blue.
The folders you had visited after the current folder (if any) are also shown in the breadcrumbs so that you can easily navigate back to these folders. This can happen if you visit folders A, B, and C in that sequence and then go back to folder B. The breadcrumbs will show all the folders A, B, and C, but folder B will be highlighted in blue, while folder C will be in grey to tell us that it’s not the current folder. The contents shown right after the breadcrumbs are the contents of the current folder, which is folder B (and not folder C).
